2009 Hummer H2 SUV

Based on GM’s line of full-size SUVs, the H2 is so massive that GM doesn’t have to submit it for EPA fuel-economy testing—it’s technically a medium-duty truck. Used to climb mountains, the H2 will impress, but if your only climbing is social, it’ll be an expensive ascent.

2008 Honda S2000

Honda's hyper-revving sportster is the closest thing to a four-wheeled motorcycle. It's a blast on the street and fabulous at the track, especially the new CR edition (for "Club Racer") with a stiffer suspension. More livable after a 2004 engine upsizing, the S2000 remains one of a kind.

2008 Honda Ridgeline

A face only a mother could love adorns a pickup only a pansy would buy. Or so goes conventional thinking. In fact, the Ridgeline is tough, practical, and a capable off-roader. It tows 5000 pounds with aplomb, and drives better than any pickup we know. Unfortunately, it's still ugly.

2008 Honda Pilot

We've given the Honda Pilot 5Best Truck wins for five years straight for reasons aplenty. The Pilot is a spacious carry-all with carlike handling and brilliant interior packaging at an affordable price. Six years on the market and the Pilot still hasn't been topped.

2008 Honda Element

Over its model run, Honda has retooled its Maytag-square Element to be more hip, with a lower ride height, bigger wheels, and body-color bumpers. It offers excellent cargo versatility, although its back seats are less than comfortable. A quirky car in search of quirky customers.

2009 Honda Civic hybrid

Refreshed for 2009 with new lights and bumpers, the Civic Hybrid remains one of the best ways to get 40 mpg. A range of trim levels offers everything from bare bones to leather and navigation. The efficient powertrain is nearly transparent and, for a green car, it actually likes curves.

2009 Honda Accord sedan

Growing longer and wider with its 2008 redesign, the ever-popular Accord hits ’09 unchanged except for revised V-6 power figures. Available with auto or manual transmissions and a long list of packages and trims, the fine-handling Accord continues as our favorite big mid-sizer.

2008 Ferrari F430 Scuderia

This is an even more hard-core version of the F430. Track-ready, it's lighter and more powerful than the F430. It also has carbon-fiber brakes and a stiffer suspension. Its 4.3-liter V-8 pumps out about 500 horsepower and an F1-style, paddle-shift six-speed transmission is standard.

2009 Ferrari California

The all-new California slots into the Ferrari range below the 612 Scaglietti and above the F430 Spider. Like the Scaglietti, it has two rear seats, and like the F430, it has a V-8 engine and a convertible top. In this case, though, it’s a hard roof, not a soft one. And, yes, it’s pricey.

2008 Ferrari 612 Scaglietti

Although it is largely regarded as the least attractive Ferrari, that's like saying it's the ugliest supermodel. In any event, the Scaglietti is Ferrari's most practical car and offers seating for four, a usable trunk, and a true supercar driving experience unmatched by any other four-seater.

2009 Ferrari 599GTB Fiorano

Ferrari’s most expensive offering, the front-engine 599GTB features aluminum construction, a fantastic V-12, and a driving experience that makes the price tag seem like a bargain. Its exterior styling has proven controversial, but it must be seen in person to be appreciated.

2008 Buick Lucerne

This is Buick's top-of-the-line sedan, offering a V-8 engine option in the grand Buick tradition. It shares its solid front-drive foundations with the Cadillac DTS, and is a quiet, relaxed-fit full-size car that is smooth, competent, and unlikely to appeal to anyone under 50 years old.

2008 Buick LaCrosse

Launched for 2005 to replace the Century and Regal, the LaCrosse is a quiet, roomy mid-size sedan with a solid body shell and smooth road manners. Buick has freshened its looks for 2008, but the big news is the revival of the old Super nameplate, backed by a 300-hp V-8 engine option

2009 Bugatti Veyron 16.4

Arguably the most outrageous car ever built, the Veyron can go 253 mph, costs about $1.7 million in base form, and has 1001 horsepower from a quad-turbo 16-cylinder engine. A convertible version is slated for production, with soft and hard tops. The price? Over $2 million.

2008 BMW 7-series

If you can look past its unique styling, the 7-series is one of the most comfortable and best handling large luxury sedans. Inside, there are annoyances like iDrive and obstinant seat controls, but the cabin is beautifully put together. A replacement is due in 2009.

2009 BMW 6-series coupe

More of a luxurious cruiser than a sports coupe, the 650i does offer a great engine note, a comfortable and quiet interior, quick acceleration, and exclusivity. The unique styling is either a reason for buying the car or for striking it from your shopping list.

2009 BMW X6

A new X5-based SUV done up like a swoopy, four-door pseudo-coupe; think high-riding Mercedes-Benz CLS. The sloping roofline provides a unique look, and rear headroom is still decent. It’s fast, luxurious, and drives very well, but is this what luxury SUV buyers are clamoring for?

2008 BMW Z4 coupe

With greater rigidity than their open-air counterparts, the stylish Z4 coupe and Z4 M coupe are more for hard-core enthusiasts than the roadsters. Unfortunately, neither version of the fixed-roof Z4 can measure up to the dynamic goodness of the Porsche Cayman series.

2008 BMW X3

Freshened for 2007 with new styling, a better interior, a 6-speed automatic, and more power, the X3 remains a sharp driver among small SUVs. It's tight inside but offers all-weather capability and BMW handling, and rides better than earlier models.

BMW M3

BMW has blessed those with the need for both speed and increased utility by offering the latest M3 in four-door form. It lacks the carbon-fiber roof of the coupe, but the fantastic, high-revving V-8, and driver-selectable dynamic preferences from the optional M Drive system remain.

2008 Acura MDX

The Nürburgring-tuned MDX features Acura's sophisticated all-wheel drive and an optional magnetic shock-absorber system with switch-selectable sport and comfort programs. The roomy interior is handsomely appointed, with seating for up to seven passengers.

2009 Acura RL

The RL is for drivers who want a $50,000 luxe car that can handle and like their luxury served with a dash of anonymity (and who don’t want a BMW or a V-8). Strengths include the hushed, immaculately detailed cabin.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 regular cab

GM's full-size pickups (Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra) are a class act in this highly competitive arena, winning a 5Best Trucks award and the last comparison test that Car and Driver ran. It's hard to beat their all-around excellence and utility, although the four-speed automatic transmission nows feels dated.

2008 Chevrolet Impala

This family four-door offers a broad range of powertrain and trim-level choices. Although it plays in a tough league-rivals include the Camry and Accord-it offers a lot of space and features for the money. Only in refinement, agility, and resale value does it falter.

2008 Chevrolet Equinox

Larger than most compact SUVs, these twins (Chevrolet Equinox and Pontiac Torrent) are only an inch shorter than a Ford Explorer. The rear seat is admirable, but there's no third row and cargo space is scant. The Equinox and Torrent now have sportier versions-the Sport and GXP, respectively-with 264-hp, 3.5-liter V-6s.

2009 Chevrolet Cobalt SS coupe

Chevy’s hot tot answers the Subaru WRX with a new 2.0-liter direct-injection turbo with a big 260 hp. At 5.7 seconds to 60 mph, the SS is fast. The techie turbo, which replaces a supercharged mill, has a “no-lift shift” feature to hasten acceleration. A lot of fun is the result.

2008 Chevrolet TrailBlazer SS

This SUV roars to 60 in just 5.5 seconds thanks to a Corvette-sourced V-8. Upgraded chassis and drivetrain components keep it on the road. It isn't as quick or nimble as its primary competitor, the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT8, but it has a larger rear seat and more towing capacity.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado 3500HD regular cab

GM's Heavy Duty pickups (Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD) resemble their half-ton kin, but everything underneath is beefed up to haul more payload and tow up to 13,000 pounds. A Silverado 1500 won our last pickup comparo, and the HD version is more rugged but just as refined, so it too is at the top of its class.

2009 Chevrolet Corvette ZR1

At the top of Corvette hierarchy, and cresting the $100,000 mark, is the supercharged ZR1 that packs 638 horsepower. A hard-core chassis and improved aerodynamics crank up handling and stability, which is much appreciated considering the ZR1 can top 200 mph.

2008 Chevrolet Aveo 4-door sedan

Built in Korea by Daewoo, the Aveo is basic transportation, and its attractive pricing includes lots of standard features. Build quality is pretty good and a redesign for 2007 addressed its lack of style. Performance, however, is not on a par with the subcompact leaders.

2008 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD crew cab

GM's Heavy Duty pickups (Chevrolet Silverado HD and GMC Sierra HD)

2008 Chevrolet Express passenger van

These great big boxes on wheels (Chevrolet Express and GMC Savana) are mostly intended for tradespeople and shuttle services. Available in equip-to-suit cargo versions or with passenger capacities ranging from 8 to 15, they're of little interest for private use except in conversion-van configurations.

2008 Chevrolet Colorado regular cab

Rental-car interior décor, thrashy engine, flimsy seats, small and uncomfortable back seat, no protective coating or tie-down rails in the bed.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado crew cab

Introduced for 2004; a 5.3-liter V-8 is now available and stability control is standard.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado extended cab

The steering is high effort with a numb feel and refinement is nil; these trucks trail the competition in every way.

2009 Chevrolet Colorado regular cab

These compact pickups (Chevrolet Colorado and GMC Canyon) are essentially identical and come in a broad variety of body styles, wheelbase and cargo-bed lengths, and load ratings. The Colorado was by far the worst in a five-truck comparison test, finishing miles behind the Honda Ridgeline and Nissan Frontier.

Based on the same platform as the Chevy Silverado full-size-pickup, this truck has GM's innovative Midgate feature, which allows pass-through capability between the cargo box and the cabin, vastly increasing versatility. Maneuverability is an issue, however.

2008 Chevrolet Malibu hybrid

This new hybrid uses the same hybrid powertrain as the Saturn Aura Green Line. It isn't a full hybrid like the Toyota Prius, which means that it can't run on electric power alone. It doesn't save much gas over nonhybrid models, so look elsewhere if you want to be a champion fuel miser.

Ford Airstream Concept

It's the same plug-in hydrogen fuel cell drivetrain that's currently running around in a Ford Edge prototype that's been developed at Ford's research center.

2010 Mercedes-Benz S400 BlueHybrid

Mercedes is planning to offer a hybrid S-class starting in 2009. The S400 BlueHybrid, a mild hybrid powered by M-B's 3.5-liter V-6, boasts a lithium-ion battery co-developed with supplier Continental and described by Daimler R&D boss Thomas Weber as "a crucial breakthrough."
